The Surgeon General Speaks Out on Oral Health
On May 25, 2000, the first-ever Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health was published, citing the strong relationship between oral health and overall good health. In his report, Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher encouraged proper oral hygiene to prevent such health problems as heart and lung disease, stroke, low-birth-weight, premature birth, and diabetes. Other problems caused by poor oral health are problems breathing, eating, swallowing, and speaking, which can make it difficult to live a full life. Daily brushing and flossing are necessary to prevent oral disease.
