Black Currants and Boysenberries plus Goji Juice

New research from Tufts University in Boston and the Horticulture and Food Research Institute of New Zealand shows that compounds in this fruit help protect the brain-- at least in the laboratory, report HealthDay News and the BBC News.
The magic ingredients are anthocyanins and polyphenolics. In cultured neuronal cells taken straight from the brain's hippocampus, these compounds had a strong protective effect. Darker black currants were the most potent in these tests. Lead study author James Joseph explained that these protective effects are quite likely to also work in the human body and not just a test tube.
Other research has shown that black currants act like antioxidants, but this is the first study to show they may protect brain cells, too. How they do it is still unclear.
