SELF Magazine Study Reveals 8 of 11 St. John's Wort Products Mislabeled
A study conducted by SELF magazine examined 11 different brands of St. John’s Wort with regard to how accurate their claims were about the content of the active ingredient hypericin and the quality of their labeling.
SELF sent out matched samples of the 11 brands to two independent labs for active ingredient testing. The results showed that eight of the brands had a lower active ingredient content than what they claimed to contain. The standardization level for most St. John’s Wort products is 0.3% hypericin—the acceptable range being from 0.27% to 0.33%. These eight brands all tested under 0.27%!
The eight brands that were mislabeled were:
- Botanic Choice
- Kira
- Spring Valley
- Celestial Seasonings
- Your Life
- Nature's Way
- Solgar
- Nature's Plus Herbal Activities
