Health Tips Protein Muscle Fat Weight Loss and Himalayan Goji Juice

More great health tips on Protein and Weight Loss and Muscle vs Fat, tips for bicyclists, natural gas relief and more.

PROTEIN AND WEIGHT LOSS -- Recent studies indicate that increasing protein intake to 25% of calorie intake increases both fat loss and weight loss. In one study, 65 obese patients consumed a diet containing 30% fat. They were divided into two groups. One group's diet contained only 12% protein and the other group's diet had 25% protein. After six months, the group eating the higher protein diet had lost 75% more weight and also lost significantly more fat - 16.7 pounds versus 11.2 pounds.

MUSCLE VS. FAT -- Muscle tissue is about 70 percent water, 22 percent protein and 7 percent fat. Fatty tissue is about 22 percent water, 6 percent protein and 72 percent fat. But one is designed to allow movement and the other to store fat, and they can't switch roles. You can change only the size of the cells. If someone very muscular stops working out, the muscles do atrophy (get smaller). If you get physically active, your muscles get larger and you burn even more fat, because larger muscles need more fuel. Also, muscles weigh more and no amount of exercise will turn fat into muscle - or vice versa.

VITAMIN B6 AND CARPAL TUNNEL PAIN -- Men with carpal tunnel syndrome - pain, tingling or numbness in the wrist or hand - often have low levels of vitamin B6, finds a new study by Richard C. Keniston, M.D., a Portland, OR, specialist in hand surgery and rehabilitation. Taking vitamin B6 supplements may help some, but not all, sufferers, he says. A typical therapeutic dose: 200 milligrams daily. Consult your doctor before starting high doses of B6.

TIPS FOR BICYCLISTS -- Keep your knees pointed straight ahead when you ride a bike. That goes whether you're on a stationary bike or out on the road. Many people tend to point their knees in towards the bike, especially during high-intensity indoor cycling classes. This puts more stress on the joints and often leads to unnecessary pain.

TOOTH 911 -- If a permanent tooth is knocked out, rinse it gently and put it back into the socket. Otherwise, put it into a glass of cold milk or water and see a dentist immediately.

WOMEN NEED FOLATE -- Women with a high intake of folate and vitamin B6 lowered their risk of heart disease by 45%. Along with supplements, you should get your folate from folate-rich foods such as broccoli, spinach, orange juice, kidney beans and other legumes. Get your B6's from bananas, avocados, lean chicken, brown rice, and oats.

NATURAL GAS RELIEF -- A mixture of one teaspoon of grated fresh ginger pulp and one teaspoon of lime juice, taken immediately after eating, can prevent gas and lower abdominal pain.

KEEP SUGAR HANDY -- Sugar is an excellent disinfectant. For open wounds or skin ulcerations, sprinkle on granulated sugar to help kill bacteria and speed healing. Smear a ring of petroleum jelly around the edges of the wound to hold the sugar in place, then put a little sugar directly on the wound. Cover the area with a bandage and be sure to change the bandage once or twice a day.
