Soy Isoflavones Preserve Bone Mass

I was reading the about the vicious cycle of prescription drugs. You go on a prescription drug for one problem, which causes side effects, which causes a doctor to prescribe a drug for that and it becomes a vicious cycle. However, this is getting a little off subject. What I wanted to talk about had to do with bone health and soy supplements.

In an issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a group of researchers from Iowa State University published a study designed to show whether soy isoflavones help to prevent osteoporosis. Sixty-nine perimenopausal women were given a daily supplement of either isoflavone-rich soy powder, soy powder low in isoflavones, or whey powder (derived from milk). They measured both bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) at the beginning and end of the study.

At the end of the 24-week study, the women supplemented with whey powder had lost bone density and bone mineral content, while the measurements of soy-supplemented women remained the same throughout. When other factors such as calcium and alcohol intake were accounted for, the isoflavone-rich soy came through as the most bone-protective.
