Selenium, Reliving Stress, Exercise Tips, Onions and Ulcers!

Wow - here's some cool information you may not have known. Want to save money, be healthier and save on the calories? Well check out the Exercise Tips article below. And check out the article on onions - some pretty interesting stuff here!

SELENIUM NEWS. Selenium has been found to be beneficial in the fight against free radicals, which contribute to premature aging, among other things. Selenium is found in the highest concentrations in seafoods, grains, muscle meats, and Brazil nuts. A multi-vitamin that contains between 70-100 mcg is recommended, but an additional supplement is not necessary. It has also recently shown that selenium can help prevent can cer.

RELIEVING STRESS - Breathe slowly and deeply. Three or four deep breaths provide the most immediate feeling of calmness anywhere, anytime.

EXERCISE TIPS -- Meal-replacement bars, sometimes called sports bars or energy bars, supply energy - in other words, calories. You can get the same boost with fewer calories from a piece of fruit, a cup of yogurt or a low-calorie granola bar.

ONION INFO -- Studies in the Netherlands show that people who eat a half an onion a day have half the risk of stomach can cer as those who don't eat any onions at all. Scientists think that the sulfur compounds in onions attack the stomach bacteria called Helicobacter pylori that's believed to cause ulcers and possibly stomach can cer. Studies in other parts of the world have reached the same conclusions.

If you like onions, an easy way to eat more is to bake them, they're delicious. Select a mild type of onion (such as a Vidalia or a Texas Sweet), cut off the top and bottom ends and peel off the tough outer layer. With a sharp knife, make several cuts through the top of the onion, cutting to within an inch of the bottom. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and a dab of butter. Microwave a few minutes until the onion is translucent. Makes a great side dish.

Here's some new information on fruits, specifically Mangoes and Oranges.

Health Perspective on Sore Throats, Chemical Laxatives, Teeth Whitener, Fat Burners and More!

Another Perspective on Health - "Health is not the mere absence of disease, but in fact a state of vitality, of energy, of creativity; ultimately, a higher state of consciousness."
Deepak Chopra, M.D.

Avoid Commercial Chemical Laxatives. - They do what they are supposed to do, however they are addicting. If too many chemical laxatives are taken, your bowel gets used to them and your constipation can get worse. A better bet would be one marked "natural" or "vegetable." These are considered safe, even if taken over a long period of time. Just be sure to drink plenty of water with them.

Natural Teeth Whitener - To brighten teeth stained by coffee and cigarettes, mix baking soda with enough hydrogen peroxide to make a toothpaste and brush teeth as usual.

Sore Throat Help - Sore throats can be annoying, but they usually can be improved with a few simple self-care steps. Low humidity in your home, failing to drink enough fluids, winter dryness, or smoke can be the culprits, but often, sore throats are a sign of infection.

During an infection, your throat fights back by increasing the blood flow to your neck. This is what causes the swelling, soreness, and cough that often accompany a sore throat.

Two types of infections cause sore throats: the more common viral infection; and the less common, but more serious, bacterial infection, known as strep throat. Here are the usual differences between the two: Viral sore throat - caused by a virus; usually causes a dry cough and a lighter colored mucus; less likely to be accompanied by a fever; often associated with cold or flu; disappears by 7 to 10 days. Strep throat - caused by bacteria; throat appears very red with white patches or pus and swollen tonsils and neck glands; often produces a temperature of over 101 degrees; requires treatment with antibiotics.

If you're suffering from a sore throat, here are a few steps to take to get relief and be well in a short time. Drink at least eight glasses of fluid a day. Gargle with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 oz. of water). Suck on hard candies or cough drops and take aspirin for fever or discomfort if needed. (Children and teenagers should take acetaminophen instead of aspirin.) Increase the humidity with vaporizers or hot showers. However, since vaporizers can transmit infection, it is important to keep them very clean.

It is recommended to take an immune system booster at the first sign of need.

Green Tea, Fiber , Diverticulitis, Quit Smoking and Gingivitis Periodontal Disease.

Today's health tips are about green tea, fiber and diverticulitis, prostate and quit smoking, plus gingivitis /periodontal disease.

TEA PROMOTES HEALTH -A study published recently in Food and Chemical Toxicology, shows the consumption of tea derived from the Camellia sinensis plant helps inhibit carcinogenesis and mutagenesis, reduces serum cholesterol and aids in
prevention of atherosclerosis. Other studies have shown green tea in particular to be a rich source of polyphenols, flavonols and catchechins, with black tea containing lesser amounts.

FIBER AND DIVERTICULITIS -- Eating a high-fiber diet now may help you to avoid developing diverticulitis later on. Diverticulitis, which is an inflammation of a pocket on your large intestine, is characterized by abdominal pain on the left side, nausea and fever. As you get older, the risk increases. Adding fiber is recommended for prevention of this problem. When adding fiber to your diet, be sure to drink plenty of pure water to prevent constipation.

SMOKING ANOTHER REASON TO QUIT -- Smoking has not been shown to increase the risk of prostate can cer. However, if men with prostate can cer smoke, the smoking appears to cause their can cer to become more invasive and more aggressive.

GINGIVITIS INFO -- In a recent survey, a majority of adults have the early signs of periodontal disease, which if not reversed, is the major reason adults lose their teeth. Gingivitis is the first sign of gum disease. To help stop the progress of gum disease, follow these recommendations: Take the time to floss and brush twice a day. Brush your teeth at the gum line. Use an electric rotary toothbrush.

Use Listerine (or other mouthwash containing cetylpridinium chloride or domiphen bromide) mouthwash. Eat a raw vegetable a day to help clean and stimulate teeth and gums. Brush teeth with a mixture of baking soda and water. Brush your gums with aloe vera gel to reduce some of the plaque in the mouth. Use a proxa brush (available in drugstores) which looks like a mini-bottle brush and slides between the teeth or under crowns or bridges. And please, visit your dentist on a regular basis.
